"DMX died in a New York hospital on April 9, after suffering a heart attack on April 2 and remaining in a coma and on life support during the following week. He was 50. With his passing, the world becomes a little less sincere and a lot more boring. He put the grit in hip-hop, his voice the brass knuckles that bloodied the face of both the culture and the pop charts. There was no lyricist more militant and compelling, no soul larger, no presence more imposing — and arguably no rapper able to achieve greater mainstream success with less compromise."
